Why I Decided to Study Computer Science at 30

At 30, I pursued a Computer Science degree to align my growing passion for technology with formal education, gain a solid foundation, overcome self-teaching struggles, and commit to a challenging journey of personal growth and professional development.

Today, I want to share why, at 29 years old, I chose to start a degree in Computer Science.

I hope this inspires someone to pursue their passion - not necessarily by studying the same field, but any path they feel connected to or passionate about.

It’s Not for Everyone, but It’s Possible

Let me start by saying this isn’t for everyone. Not everyone should go back to school or start a new degree. But I firmly believe that everyone has the potential and capability to study anything they want, as long as they have the right attitude. This applies, regardless of jobs, families, or other commitments.

So, What Exactly Is Computer Science?

Computer science is a broad, fascinating, and ever-evolving field that impacts nearly every aspect of our lives. As we know, technology has made the world better, faster, and more connected. But this didn’t happen by magic. It’s the result of brilliant IT professionals who turned their passion for technology into tools and software that have transformed our lives.

Formal Education vs Self-Taught Routes

Now, I’m not saying an IT degree is the only way to contribute to technological innovation. Many people have made incredible strides without a formal background. However, a rigorous curriculum provides a solid foundation, ensuring you delve into the nitty-gritty details often overlooked in a self-taught path.

Yes, many will say you can learn everything online. And they’re right! But the self-taught route isn’t for everyone. I remember trying to learn how to code years ago. After months of feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information and lack of structure, I decided to quit and focus on digital marketing and content creation instead.

Discovering My Passion for Technology

Fast forward a few years: after launching several blogs, a successful Instagram media project, and a few YouTube channels, I realized how much I enjoy the tech behind the tools I use. Which ultimately led me back to learning how to code, properly.

A Journey of Growth and Commitment

For me, this journey isn’t just about learning something new. It’s also about challenging myself to commit to a long and difficult path - one that fosters growth and personal development.
